You Can’t Hurry Love
Catherine stood in the break room and glanced at the
tall man standing beside of her as Grissom stormed out of the room. She offered him a weak smile as she flipped
her hair out of her face.
“Well, that was interesting…”
Warrick shook his head slowly as he chuckled. “You know better than to push him. But, for some reason, you can’t seem to help
yourself.”
“I was just trying to help.”
He scoffed at the excuse she had just given
him. A very lame excuse in his
opinion.
“Look, Catherine…you know how Grissom is. He has to figure things out in his own
time…and in his own way. And if you push
him off of his carefully planned-out course, you’ll throw everything
off-balance.”
Catherine sighed heavily as she poured herself a cup
of coffee. “And just how long have we
given him to ‘figure things out’? Three
years? Within three years of meeting
Eddie, we were married and had a two year old daughter.”
“And look how well that turned out.” He chuckled as she narrowed her eyes at
him. “All I’m saying is that Grissom and
Sara are not you and Eddie. It’s obvious
to all of us that they belong together.
But, until it’s obvious to Grissom…there isn’t much else we can do.”
Catherine rolled her eyes as she watched Warrick
walk out of the room.

Grissom looked up as his office door slowly
opened. He breathed a sigh of relief as
Sara walked in. She offered him a
tentative smile as she closed the door behind her.
“Were you expecting someone else?”
He removed his glasses and placed them on his desk
as he nodded. “Catherine…”
She chuckled lightly as she sat down in a
chair. “So…that sigh I heard was a good
one?”
He smiled in response, and then glanced down at the
folder she was carrying. “Find something
new?”
She blushed lightly as she cleared her throat. “Just got back from seeing Doc Robbins.” Opening the folder, she pulled out the
autopsy report and handed it to him. “A
substantial amount of morphine was found in his system…”
Grissom scanned the paper and smiled. “I think ‘substantial’ would be an
understatement. Have Brass and his boys
bring in the vic’s wife for another round of questioning. This is certainly not suicide. With the amount of heroin this guy injected,
he would’ve been dead within a few seconds.
Definitely not enough time for him to climb onto a chair and put a noose
around his neck.”
“That’s what I was thinking too.” She grinned as she stood up. “So…Griss?”
He looked up, halting his task of digging for his
keys in the top drawer of his desk.
“Yes?”
“Do you think we should tell Catherine soon?” She shifted her weight on her feet. “I mean…she’s apparently hitting us both
pretty hard right now.”
Grissom’s eyes narrowed slightly. “What has she said to you?”
Sara shrugged her shoulders as she looked into his
eyes. “The usual. ‘Why can’t you two just see what’s in front
of you?’ You know…Catherine’s normal
subtlety.”
Grissom chuckled softly. “Catherine…subtle. Two words that should never be used in the
same sentence.” His eyes sparkled in the
dim light of his office as her laughter filled the room. “What did you tell her?”
“That…my exact words?”
He licked his lips as he nodded silently.
She grinned as she folded her arms across her
chest. “If anything happens between
Grissom and me in a personal nature, it would have to come from him. He’s already shot down a dinner
invitation…and I’m not in the habit of hanging onto someone who isn’t
interested in being held onto.”
“You’re full of shit, Sidle.”
She shook her head quickly. “No, that is what I said.”
“That’s not what I’m talking about.” His smile grew as her eyes questioned
him. “You kept hanging on…”
She blushed quickly and winked at him. “That’s because I knew, deep down, that you
were interested in being held onto…you just didn’t want to admit it.”
He laughed as she pulled the door open and stepped
into the hall.

He groaned as he heard Catherine call his name. Turning around, he merely stared at her as
she stopped in front of him.
“So?”
He narrowed his eyes in mock-confusion as she
impatiently tapped her foot. “So…what?”
She gave an exaggerated sigh and rolled her
eyes. “Do you plan on ignoring this
forever?”
“How can I with you here?”
“Dammit, Grissom.
Look, I know you were hurt once before…but, this is getting
ridiculous. You and Sara…”
“Belong together…are perfect for one another…are
just going to keep hurting one another if we don’t do something about this. You’ve said all of that before,
Catherine. And…unless you have something
new to add to your campaign, I do have plans.”
She grabbed his arm as he attempted to turn from
her. “Just how long do you think Sara is
going to wait around for you?”
“I’ve never asked Sara to wait.”
“The thing is, Grissom…you don’t have to ask
her. She just does it. Because she…”
Grissom’s eyes darkened quickly as he pulled his arm
out of her grasp. “Why do you think
everything has to be done on your terms?
Why can’t I just work out my feelings on whatever personal relationship
I choose to enter on my own? This is my
life, Catherine. Not yours. And not everyone runs their relationships in
the same manner that you do.”
“Grissom…love doesn’t just present itself to you at
every corner…”
“And it does for you?”
He fought the urge to smile as he realized that he
had rendered her speechless. His eyes
focused on a point over her left shoulder and the smile surfaced.
Catherine’s eyes clouded over with confusion for a
moment before she glanced over her shoulder.
Seeing the brunette walking towards them, she turned her eyes back
towards the man standing in front of her.
Grissom’s smile widened as Sara stopped beside of
him and placed her hand on his arm. “You
ready?”
He nodded silently as he brushed the back of her
hand with his fingertips. As if he
suddenly remembered that Catherine was standing in front of him, he snapped his
eyes towards her. He smiled lightly at
her as she stood there, mouth agape.
“I have plans, Catherine. Have a nice night off…”
“You…and Sara?”
Grissom tilted his head to the left. “I thought that’s what you wanted.”
“I…well…yeah.
Just…uh…when?”
Sara plucked the keys to the
“But…” She
shook her head, her voice unable to form any more words.
Grissom smiled as he took a couple of steps
backwards and offered her a small wink.
“Some things are too good to be hurried…”
Catherine watched the couple leave, bewilderment
showing clearly in her eyes. As the door
swung closed, she chuckled softly to herself.
She made her way to the locker room trying to decide whether to be happy
for them or to be slightly angry that they hid it from her.
As she grabbed her jacket, she smiled brightly. The decision had been made.
