Don’t Let Him Steal Your
Heart Away
Sara walked into the dimly lit office and
closed the door. Grissom looked up as he
heard the latch click. His heart lurched
painfully.
“Sara…”
She offered him a weak smile as she sat down in
the chair across from his desk. “We need
to talk.”
He nodded slowly and closed the file after
quickly scribbling his name on the bottom.
He folded his hands on top of the folder and took a deep breath. “I…uh…I…how are
you?”
“Grissom…”
Sara sighed and leaned forward slightly in her chair. “This isn’t the time for small talk.”
“I know.
I do. I just…I don’t know
where…or what…”
“Your picture is still on the wall…”
Grissom bit his bottom lip, chewing the flesh
harder than he intended. “Where?”
“Where it’s always been. There was nothing going on. He was just a friend, I swear. He was looking for a job; that’s the
truth. There was no hidden agenda
there…”
“You were lonely…”
Sara nodded and glanced down at her hands
briefly. “I was having a hard time
after…” She sighed heavily. “He listened.
You wouldn’t. Not at that time.”
“I tried…”
“Grissom, we’ve been through a lot of shit together. And then you wouldn’t listen when I…”
“He kissed you.”
There was no anger in his voice. There was…nothing. It was uttered as a simple statement with no
emotion. Sara’s eyes began to glisten as
she twisted the ring on her finger.
“I didn’t kiss him.”
“I was…scared.”
“So was I.
I still am.” She twisted the ring
again, this time stopping when the diamond was positioned on top of her finger.
He glanced down at the piece of jewelry and
licked his lips nervously. “Why?”
Her lip quivered gently. “Why what?”
His eyes remained focused on the ring. “Why are you still scared?”
“Because…I don’t know if I’ve ruined what…what
we had…”
He looked up to see a single tear roll down her
cheek. “Have.”
She tilted her head slightly. “What?”
“Have…not had.”
He stood up and slowly walked around his desk. He stopped beside of her and knelt next to
her chair. He gently wiped the tear from
her skin and inhaled softly. “You
haven’t.”
Another tear spilled down her face. “I miss you…”
He took her hand in his and caressed the soft
skin. “I miss you too.”
He leaned forward and pressed a tender kiss to
her cheek. “I know that I
overreacted. I know that I said some
things that I shouldn’t have…things I wish I could take back. I know that I should’ve given you the chance
to explain right then, but I just…I couldn’t.”
“Do you…do you still…love me?”
He smiled lightly. It was the first real smile anyone had seen
from Grissom in the past week. “I never
stopped, Sara.”
Hearing a crash in the hallway, Grissom jumped
and glanced towards the window. He shook
his head as he watched the animated movements of Nick and Greg right outside of
his office as they argued over whose fault it was that a tray full of test
tubes were rolling across the tiled floor.
He looked back into Sara’s eyes and smiled
again. This time the emotion behind it
was much stronger. “Would you like to go
for a drive?”
She returned his smile with one of her own and
nodded slowly.

He switched off the ignition when he reached
the spot on the hill overlooking the lake.
The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a soft glow on the water
down below.
He took a deep breath and turned his head to
look at the brunette sitting in the passenger seat. “I was wrong.”
She tilted her head in confusion as she met his
eyes. “About?”
“I shouldn’t have pushed you away like I
did. I should have trusted you to do
what was in your heart. But, I jumped to
conclusions. Again. I took one incident and created an entire
scenario that played on a continuous loop in my mind.”
He glanced down at the yellowish bruise over
the knuckles on her right hand. “What
really happened?”
She flexed her fingers, wincing as her knuckles
screamed in protest. She shrugged her
shoulders and stared out the windshield.
“That’s what happens when I get an uninvited and unwanted kiss.”
There was an uncomfortable silence hanging
within the confines of the Tahoe. His
voice startled her when he spoke.
“Those things I was worried about before we
started dating…” He glanced at her to
see if she was listening. She arched an
eyebrow in a silent request for him to continue with his thought. “I was wrong about those too.”
“What were you scared about?”
His brow furrowed, causing her to smile. “Earlier…in your office…you said you were
scared. Why?”
“Oh…”
His thumb rubbed absently against the steering wheel. “I thought I had ruined what we have. I thought I had lost you with my actions. I thought he had stolen your heart away from
me.”
She reached over and pulled his hand from the
steering wheel, lacing her fingers with his.
“Not a chance, Griss.”
His thumb rubbed small circles into the back of
her hand. “What happened? After…after I left…”
“You mean after I hit him?” She smiled at him. He chuckled lightly as he nodded. “I told him to pack his things and get out of
our lives. And that’s not how you repay
someone’s kindness. You don’t try to
wreck a solid relationship when those in the relationship are allowing you to
stay in their home while you look for work…no matter how long you’ve been
friends.”
“Did he hurt you?”
“No, Grissom.
No, he didn’t.”
Grissom nodded solemnly. “Did I hurt you?” The question came out as a mere whisper.
A lump formed quickly in Sara’s throat. She squeezed his hand lightly as she inhaled
deeply. “Yes, you did.”
He turned to look into her dark eyes, his blue
orbs glistening with unshed tears. “I’m
sorry.”
“You worry too much, Griss. Over things that you shouldn’t.” She lifted her hand and gently caressed his
cheek. “It’s your ring that I wear, you
know…”
“I love you.”
She smiled a genuine smile as he leaned into
her and brushed his lips against hers.
“Can we go home now?”
He nodded and reached for the ignition.
